PENANG: Police will stop and check any motorcyclists riding together in groups of more than three to keep the Mat Rempit menace in check.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Azam Abd Hamid said the operation would start today.
He said that although the problem was not widespread in George Town, police would carry out the operation to check this menace.
“We have identified the areas where these illegal racers usually hang out. On Sunday at 2.30am, we chased away a group comprising more than 600 youths in Gurney Drive.
“A number of them were probably unhappy over being chased out of the island and went on a robbing spree,” he told a press conference yesterday.
